Onion Hyred

Go Back

The first hybrid onion to be offered as a set. Produces a more rounded shaped bulb than Red Baron, which has long been the standard variety of heat treated red onion set.

In addition, excellent internal flesh quality and a very good skin means that it can be stored for a longer period.

It also has a deeper stronger flavour.

Grew well and very easily in the spring drought. Will be growing again

I can highly recommend heat prepared Onions, I had very few failures and non bolted, lovely flavor too.

Planted out at the end of March (into an exposed Pennine garden), and are growing well; the foliage is tall, and the bulbs are 6-7cm across (July). There were about 120 sets in the bag (only advertised as 100), which was nice, and only a handful haven't come up. They've coped well with the year's strange weather, and I'm looking forward to lifting them.

Good crop of medium sized onion which kept well over the winter. Will definitely be growing Hyred again this year.

This is the first year that I had no bolting onions, inspite of having drought all spring, and non-stop rain from mid July to harvest time. Most of them good size, too, so will get these again for 2011

Grown in cold wet heavy soil in exposed North West area. No losses or bolters. Average harvest size 7 to 8 ounces. An excellent onion for difficult conditions.

I must recomend this onion not one bolted and that is a 1st good size to.

I am extremely pleased with my Hyred Onion Sets and award them four stars, mainly on the merit that not a single one bolted, despite the particularly dry spring. A big contrast to last year, despite the particularly dry spring

I too have also always grown Red Baron which I got excellent results with - this variety has been disappointing. Not sure if it is the weather but the bulbs are very small - some have barely increased in size from the sets that were planted.

I used to always have red baron but found this variety to be better

I was very lucky to be one of the few staff that got to grow Hyred. My crop was exceptional, it stored extremely well and produced some fantastic, bulbous onions, which were full of flavour. I'm a big fan of red onions, I much prefer the mild flavour to regular onions. A very "mature - yet mild" flavoured red onion. I personally recommend growing Hyred this year.
