Basil Genovese

Go Back

Growing a useful range of herbs from seed is so easy!

Grow them in the border among your flowers, in a special herb bed, or simply in pots by the back door. You can even grow some on your kitchen windowsill. They are easy to dry and even easier to freeze.

Basil Genovese is the most commonly grown variety. Taller with larger leaves. Ideal to use in salads especially with tomatoes, pasta sauces and combines well with garlic.

Remove flowering shoots to increase the harvest of leaves.

Needs a sunny sheltered position.

growing information

Sowing Indoors

Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost.  Sow seeds thinly over the surface, and lightly cover them with a little more compost.  Place in warmth 15-20°C(60-70°F), and keep moist.

Cover the tray with cling film, but remove as soon as seedlings begin to emerge.

Transplanting

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when danger of frost has passed.

Allow 20-30cm (8-12in) between plants.  Choose a warm, sheltered spot.

Growing on / thinning

Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from bright sun.  When large enough to handle, transplant 5cm (2in) apart into trays of potting compost, or individually into small pots.
