This ornamental basil is much more uniform in height and width than other types, but the lush, aromatic leaves are just as delicious.

It can be left to flower, after which the purple bracts remain, adding gto the decorative value.

Alternatively, pick the young leaves for kitchen use before flowers appear.

Magical Michael is a sun worshipper and will also be very happy growing in a pot on a sunny sheltered patio.

growing information

Sowing Indoors

Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface, and lightly cover them with a little more compost. Place in warmth 15-20C (60-70F) and keep moist.

Growing on / thinning

Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from bright sun. When large enough to handle, transplant to 8cm (3in) pots, allowing 3 or 4 seedlings per pot.

Hardening off / planting

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when danger of frost has passed. Allow 30cm (12in) between each group of plants. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot for best results.

Special note

Alternatively, sow pinches of seed in 8cm pots, and allow the plants to mature in the pots on a warm windowsill.

They can also be grown in pots on a sunny patio.
