growing information

Sowing Outdoors

Sow seed thinly in pre-watered shallow rows, and cover with a little soil. Allow about 25cm (10in) between rows. As seedlings develop, thin them to about2cm (1in) apart.

Keep soil moist until seedlings are established. February and early March sowings are best made in a cold frame or under cloches. The extra effort ensures the earliest possible crop of baby carrots in late spring.

Special note

If the soil is dry, water it well prior to lifting the roots. Always firm back the soil round those roots still to be harvested.

Carrots do best in light, well dug, stone free soils which have not been recently manured.
