growing information

Sowing Indoors

Unlike most other wallflowers, these can be sown successfully indoors. Sow in trays of moist seed compost in gentle warmth 10-15C (50-60F).

Transplant 5cm (2in) apart into other trays of compost when seedlings are large enough to handle. Gradually accustom to cooler conditions before planting out from March onwards for late spring, summer and autumn flowering. Allow 20cm (8in) between plants.

Sowing Outdoors

Sow seed in short, shallow, pre-watered rows. Lightly cover them with a little soil. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge. Thin seedlings to around 2cm (1in) apart to allow development.

Transplanting

Transplant young plants to their final positions when large enough to handle. Allow 20cm (8in) between plants. When they are around 15cm (6in) high, pinch out the growing tip to encourage bushy growth.

Plants raised in this manner can be brought into flower in late summer, autumn, winter or spring, depending on the sowing time.

Special note

These wall flowers will generally begin flowering about 16 weeks after sowing and continue for several weeks. Regularly dead-head plants to prolong flowering. First year flowering perennials.
