Introduce this beautiful and evergreen tree to your garden for visual interest and edible fruit. The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) shows off attractive glossy green leaves all year round and in autumn a host of pretty white bell flowers like that of lily-of-the-valley. These flowers transform into attractive orange and red fruit fondly resembling strawberries, hence the tree’s common name.

The flowers attract pollinating insects like bees which stick around adding animation to your garden and pollinate different flowers which ensures a rich diversity of plants in wonderful colours and forms.

Beautiful peeling bark is another of this tree’s great attributes. As your tree gets older your strawberry tree reveals more of its bark which is chestnut to cinnamon in colour and looks tropical despite its more hardy nature (tolerates temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)).

Useful Tip:

Grow in urban gardens or country garden and your strawberry tree will thrive given a sheltered spot away from cold draughts and wind tunnels. Grow in ericaceous compost as this tree is related to heathers and requires the same soli conditions.
