Commonly known as Bearded irises, iris germanica are large and showy irises with fans of sword-shaped foliage. Grouped with Iris bulbs these striking plants actually grow from rhizomes but they are just as easy to grow as iris bulbs. Iris germanica are completely hardy and they thrive in hot sunny gardens.
Our collection includes one each of:

Iris germanica ‘Distant Chimes’
Elegantly frilled, two-colour flowers.

Iris germanica ‘Ringo’
Wow! These irises are a perfect blend of light and shade!

Iris germanica ‘Night Owl’
These Iris blooms are deep, dark and dramatic.

Plant Iris germanica rhizomes very shallowly. Bury the roots but leave the rhizome exposed. The Iris rhizomes should be just on the surface of the soil. Place these iris bulbs where they will get the most sunshine and where they won’t be overshadowed by other plants. They benefit from being baked in the sun and this ensures a great display year after year.

Irises can eventually spread to form clumps and it is hard to remove weeds once the bed is established so weed the area well before you plant.

How you receive your bulbs

You receive our spring-flowering bulbs in autumn in a plastic mesh. This is to keep the bulbs together in a pack which is nice and airy – perfect to keep the bulbs healthy while in transit.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your bulbs in a cool, light and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Look to planting your bulbs within a week of receiving them.
