Leek Terminal Plants x40
Great healthy, vigorous early-variety of tasty leek, ready to harvest from mid-summer so you can be adding to summer dishes and autumn recipes before the onset of winter. Uniform in growth these make an attractive addition to your vegetable patch and don’t take up too much space.
Leeks appreciate a sunny spot so bear this in mind when sowing or planting. Prepare your soil well before sowing leeks or adding young plants. In the winter add lots of bulky compost or manure to the soil to increase the nutrient levels.
Your plants should arrive to you in a plastic blister pack which provide a suitable humid environment around the leaves while in transit before delivery to your home.
On arrival remove all packaging and water the soil of the small leek plants so that it is moist but not waterlogged. Look to plant up in their permanent position straight away if possible. If you have to wait, keep plants in a light place away from direct sunlight and keep the soil of the small plants moist at all times. Plant up in their permanent position within seven days.
To really put the young plants in good stead, add a general purpose fertiliser to your soil a couple of weeks before planting.
Transplant young plants into the ground in late spring/early summer. They should be about 20cm (8in) in length and about the thickness of a pencil.
For their eventual planting hole use a dibber to create a long thin hole 15cm deep. Drop the young plants in the holes and fill the holes with water. You don’t need to fill the soil with soil as the leeks ‘girth-out’ quickly to fill them.
When harvesting in late summer to autumn lift carefully with a border fork.
