Sambucus nigra porphyrobphylla 'Black Lace'- Shrub

£16.99 each

  • Hardy Perennial - sow indoors or on a seedbed (April-June); transplant later to flower for many seasons
  • Attracts Bees

Sambucus nigra porphyrobphylla ‘Black Lace’ (synonym Sambucus ‘Eva’). Commonly called black elder, these dark-leaved shrubs make a dramatic statement in beds and borders. The finely cut black foliage is the perfect foil for its sprays of pink flowers that appear in early summer. These are followed in autumn by dark, red-black berries.

Grow Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ in fertile, moist but well drained soils. The foliage keeps its dark colour best when shrubs are grown in full sun.

Planting

Dig a hole large and deep enough to take the plant’s root ball.

Gently tap the plant out of its pot without disturbing the soil around the roots.

Position the plant at the bottom of the hole so the plant’s crown is level with the surface and sits at the same depth as it was in the pot; make sure the roots are in direct contact with the soil.

Backfill with the excavated soil and firm in gently. Water to settle the soil around the roots.

Aftercare

Shrubs are easy-care plants getting better every year with the minimum of fuss.

Watering: Water regularly in the first few weeks after planting and then make sure the plants are kept moist in dry spells.

Feeding:  Give shrubs a boost with a handful of granular feed hoed into the soil in spring.

Pruning:  Prune Sambucus ‘Black Lace’ hard back to the base in early spring to encourage lots of fresh new foliage with the best colour. On established plants cut out any congested stems.

Your Sambucus Black Lace shrub comes in a 3 litre pot – perfect to plant in soil at any time of the year.

These plants arrive in a pot within a box to keep the plant sturdy and upright. The soil area may be covered in sacking or polythene to keep the soil moist which is ideal for the roots.

On arrival lift the plant gently out of the pot to check there are lots of roots showing on the sides of the soil.

Can’t plant straight away?

If you can't plant up your plant straight away, remove the sacking or polythene, and keep your potted plant in a sunny position. Keep the soil moist by watering each day. Look to planting into its permanent position within 5-7 days.
