Stocks (Matthiola) are beautiful perfumed plants; they are members of the brassica family but no one would guess it from their spicy clove fragrance. They make beautiful container plants; or grow them en masse to scent the whole garden. Single or double they are all worth a place in the garden
Grow biennial stocks from seed in spring, summer and autumn.
Ten Week Stocks are also biennial but they are normally regarded as annuals and sown in early spring to be planted out in late spring.
You'll get early flowers from a summer and autumn sowing on strong, sturdy stems. Stocks are hardy plants and tough enough to brave a UK winter and still come up smiling.
Sow seed at 16C/64F and grow on in cooler conditions.
When you grow from seed there is an easy way to see which flowers will be double- keep the seedlings below 50F/10C for a week and the palest seedlings will have double flowers.
