Want a compact climber with glossy leaves and a constellation of starry white, scented flowers in mid to late-summer? Trachelospermum jasminoides is the perfect tall plant to climb a fence or better – a wall near to your front or back door for a welcoming aroma.

It’s evergreen too so will do the job of covering a vertical space nicely all year round with small glossy leaves that sometimes tinge with red in autumn.

Just plant in well-draining soil; add some general purpose fertiliser when planting to give it an initial boost. Adding bulky compost will increase the nutrients in the soil as well as the soil texture, improving the root environment for a greater abundance of flowers.

This attractive and independent climber generally takes care of itself- with its self-clinging habit. Just add some short supports when you first plant into the ground to encourage the stems to climb.  Once established, the stems will climb unaided.

Prune out dead or damaged stems only in the spring, but leave all other growth in tact; try to keep pruning to a minimum.
