The rare Odessa variety of Calla lily Zantedeschia makes a dramatic impression with its near-black hood-like funnel-shaped flowers. These compact flowers are great for borders but also containers if you struggle with space.

Odessa grows well in damp soils and is suitable for pondside planting or growing in pots with compost that stays moist at all times.

Zantedeschias are one of the faster summer bulbs to flower, only taking eight to ten weeks. Great for when you want sophisticated and moody black flowers from as early as May. They look lovely as cut flowers in bouquets and vases with their unusual and exotic appearance.

They are easy to grow, love full sun and will flower from mid-summer till the first frost. Expect Odessa to reach 40cm in height and spreading 15cm wide. Pair with other Calla lilies or pondside favourites like irises.
